FAQs
Although stories can be told in many different ways, Storytelling is principally the art of sharing a story using our words, our voice, and our memory. Storytellers do not read from books or notes, and they do not learn scripts. Storytelling has developed from the oral tradition and is the artistic practice and a professional craft refining the skills we all use when sharing stories.
Storytelling is one of the most lightweight and portable art forms, requiring minimal space, materials and technology to provide a fantastic experience. Storytellers engage quickly with audiences of all ages, respond to a variety of themes and adapt skilfully to the specific needs of events and organisers. Our storytellers have a large repertoire that they can utilise in many settings.
A storyteller will sit or stand in a designated area and share a series of stories with a pre-
organised audience or passing visitors. Each story is usually between 5-15 minutes long.
Storytellers will perform by talking directly to the audience and engage them in ‘active
participation’ depending on age and ability. The audience will be invited to listen, most likely
while seated.
A typical performance lasts between 30–60 minutes, after which the storyteller will take a
short break. If storytelling is taking place across a full day, longer breaks should be planned
to allow the storyteller to maintain the focus, energy and concentration required to deliver
high-quality performances.
Our storytellers can adapt to any space you wish to, providing it’s not next to a large PA system! Our storytellers can tell in the corner of your rooms, in reading corners, at the front of a meeting room whilst the audience sit at their desks or around tables, or on stage in a theatre. We can perform in a school assembly hall with several classes in one room or with small groups in breakout spaces or classes. Storytelling beautifully outside in gardens and woodland areas. We can provide a Storytelling Yurt for outdoor events at extra cost. Please ask to see our yurt rates if interested.
Our storytellers can adapt to work with any subject or theme you are interested in. Stories are drawn from folklore, mythology, legend, literature, history and personal tales. They don’t use books while telling, all stories are told from memory. Our storytellers have spent years building and refining a repertoire so they can find the right story for you in the moment. They can also work with you in advance to develop bespoke stories in response to a particular subject.
Events that take place over a few hours will require several storytelling ‘sessions’ of between 30-60 minutes to be delivered. Storytelling can be demanding for the storyteller and the performer as it requires a lot of focus, energy and concentration, therefore it is good to have small breaks between sessions. Bigger breaks throughout the day are necessary if you’re bringing in a storyteller for a whole day or for the duration of your event.
A storytelling performance focuses on the art of storytelling itself. The audience’s main role is to listen and enjoy the experience, with opportunities for light interaction such as questions, conversation, riddles or moments of participation. The storyteller leads the session by sharing stories from memory and creating a shared experience with the audience.
A storytelling workshop is a more active and collaborative process. Participants are invited to take part in activities such as story-making, creative exercises, discussion, performance skills or exploring a particular theme. Our storytellers are experienced facilitators and can design a workshop process that suits your group, age range and objectives.
All our workshops will include storytelling, but they also require active involvement from participants. If you are looking for a more interactive experience rather than a performance, please specify this when booking so we can plan the most suitable format for your event.
Storytelling performance is suitable for most, if not all events, whereas storytelling workshops are suitable for smaller groups and can be delivered as a one-off or in a series or block.
